MECH-290 - Fundamentals of CMM

Numerically controlled CMM machines have become the cornerstone of modern quality control departments and have gained prominent positions on shop floors. This course is an introduction to the fundamental concepts of the Mitutoyo CRYSTA-Apex S Series Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMS) recently installed at STCC. Concentration is placed on GeoPak(R), Mitutoyo’s geometry module for both online and offline part program creation including proble calibration, alignment, and measurement. Mitutoyo’s MeasurLink(R) Manual CNC Managment Module will be emplasized incorporating the GD&T standards of ASME Y14.41. The student will develop inspection programs using STCC’s offline terminal network for programming and simulation. These programs are then loaded on the CMMS and the student is ready to complete the inspection process. Prototype parts will be measured to determine coordinate location , size, distance, parallelism, squareness, circularity, runout, and position. Students from both the design and CNC machining disiplines of the Mechanical Engineering Department are encouraged to add this course to their schedule. Using these CMMs will give both the engineering and machining student a different perspective and a hands-on understanding of GD&T.
