MECH-322 - Statics and Strength of Materials

3 credits
This course begins by studying the fundamentals of static equilibrium. Topics included are resultants of force systems, tension and compression, moments, and shear and bending moment diagrams. The course then proceeds to the study of stress and strain as produced by the application of forces on beams, columns, and shafts. The calculations of centroids and moments of inertia of beam cross-sections are emphasized. The influence of material selection on shear, bearing, bending, and torsional stresses is emphasized. Also included is the analysis of beam and torsional deflections including thermal deformation. Offered Spring Semester.

Prerequisite(s): MATH-132
