SOC-115 - Sociology of Hip Hop3 credits For more than forty years, Hip Hop has evolved not only within the confines of American mainstream culture, but it has also become a global movement. This course explores political and aesthetic foundations of Hip Hop parallel to its musical, corporeal, visual, spoken and literary manifestations in U.S. culture. How the media portrays and “profits” from hip-hop’s impact will also be explored. Some topics that will be discussed include but are not limited to: gender relations, cross-cultural impact, identity formation, sexism, and homophobia, and the differences among Hiphop, Hip Hop, and hip-hop.
Prerequisite(s): SOC 101
Mass Transfer Block: Credits earned in this course are counted towards the MassTransfer Block Behavioral and Social Sciences requirements.
