Electronic Systems Engineering Technology - ESET.AS

Electronic Systems Engineering Technology is a continually expanding field offering exciting careers in electronic system design, manufacturing, maintenance, marketing, support, and management. Graduates have assumed major roles in a wide variety of professional areas. Some of these areas include sensors, communications, control systems, circuit design, system design, systems testing, computer system design, medical systems, and materials testing. As the country designs, upgrades, replaces and maintains the vast communications highway, most of the work will be done by electronics technicians.

Math, computer and technical skills all provide a base for career development that often leads to leadership and management positions in the broad field of electronics engineering.

Educational background: Applicants are advised that competency in algebra, trigonometry, and physics is important. Applicants without this background may take the prerequisite courses at STCC although this may lengthen the time needed to complete the degree program.

Graduates are often encouraged to pursue a bachelor’s degree upon completion of their associate’s degree. Students wishing to further their education in an engineering field should notify their STCC academic advisor early in their course of study so that arrangements can be made to facilitate the transfer process.

Electronic Systems Engineering Technology is one of the four degree programs in the Electronics Systems Group. The other degree programs are Computer Systems Engineering Tech - CSET.AS, Laser Electro-Optics Technology - LEOT.AS, and Telecommunications Technology - TCOM.AAS.

Students are encouraged to contact members of the department for course selection and career advising.

Minimum Grade Requirement: Students in Electronic Systems Engineering Technology must receive a grade of “D” or better. A QPA of 2.0 must be achieved for graduation.

Upon the successful completion of requirements for this program, as listed below, the degree of Associate in Science in Electronic Systems Engineering Technology will be awarded.

Educational Program Objectives


The career and professional accomplishments that the Electronic Systems Engineering Technology program is preparing graduates to achieve are as follows:

  1. To apply mathematic, scientific, and engineering technology knowledge and methods to problem solving in an electronic systems technology environment;
  2. To use both the hardware and software tools of the electronic systems technology environment to: test, measure, analyze, and ultimately diagnose the health of the system being observed; 
  3. To be able to both access and disseminate information effectively, via the ability to locate and use pertinent technical literature and via the ability to communicate thoughts and ideas through: written, oral, and graphical means; 
  4. To demonstrate the skills and behaviors of engineering technology professionals, including: lifelong learning and professional development, ethics, teamwork, and quality improvement.

Program Outcomes


Program outcomes are the specific skills, knowledge and behaviors that a student acquires while going through the curriculum. Upon graduation from the ESET program, the student is expected to be able to demonstrate:

  1. Competence in the knowledge, skills, techniques, and tools of the electronic systems engineering technologist discipline including: expertise in the application of circuit analysis and design, computer programming, associated software, analog and digital electronics, microprocessors, and engineering standards to the building, testing, operation, and maintenance of electrical/electronic(s) systems;
  2. An ability to employ a knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to engineering technology problems that are practical knowledge centric;
  3. An ability to perform standard tests and measurements involving electronic systems, and to be able to conduct, analyze, and interpret experimental results;
  4. An ability to function effectively as a member of a technical team;
  5. An ability to identify, analyze and solve engineering technology problems involving electronic systems;
  6. An ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication effectively, in both technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to distinguish and use appropriate technical literature;
  7. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in self-directed lifelong learning and professional development;
  8. An understanding of and responsibility to address professional and ethical responsibilities, including a respect for diversity;
  9. A commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement.
