SPN-205 - Intermediate Spanish for Human Services

3 credits
In this course, students will learn intermediate Spanish-language skills needed to successfully communicate with Spanish speaking individuals in professional human services fields. The course teaches intermediate-level grammar and vocabulary, and includes activities to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing. This course emphasizes specialized vocabulary building, role-play, and cross-cultural understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures. The course provides both a review of foundational grammar concepts as well as an introduction to intermediate grammar including direct and indirect objects, reflexive verbs, formal commands, verb tenses including past preterite, past imperfect, present perfect, and the subjunctive. Students will leave the course with knowledge and skills that can be immediately applied to work with Spanish speaking individuals in human services, behavioral health, and/or social work fields. The course is designed for students with prior Spanish study or experience, including intermediate Spanish students and heritage Spanish speakers.

Prerequisite(s): SPN 101, SPN 105, 3 years of highschool Spanish, or permission of the instructor.

Mass Transfer Gen Ed Foundation: Credits earned in this course are counted towards the Mass Transfer Gen Ed Foundation’s Humanities and Fine Arts requirements.
