ENG-131 - Diverse Voices in Short Stories and Poetry3 credits This course is designed to cover short stories and poetry from authors of diverse ethnic backgrounds. Close reading of works will be used to spark exploration of course topics, such as identity, family dynamics, cross-cultural interactions, assimilation, economic status, and employment at various points in history. In order to provide additional context to the readings and to encourage more informed participation, course readings will include brief biographical content about the authors. Coursework (class discussions, presentations, reflective responses, and/or essays) will require students to use critical thinking strategies to make connections between their lives (and/or the lives of others), relevant historical events, and the literature being explored. To foster greater inclusion, students will also be invited to and assisted in locating and sharing works from authors of their own background(s) or backgrounds of interest if they are not represented in the materials already chosen for the course.
Prerequisite(s): Completion of ENG-101 (minimum grade C-).
Mass Transfer Gen Ed Foundation: Credits earned in this course are counted towards the Mass Transfer Gen Ed Foundation’s Humanities and Fine Arts requirements.
Course previously known as: ENG-224
