School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

 Students celebrate on Commencement evening.

The School of Art, Humanities, and Social Sciences plays a pivotal role in the academic and intellectual development of all STCC students, whether they are pursuing a program leading toward a specific career or preparing to transfer to a baccalaureate program.

In its focus upon developing students’ knowledge and skills, particularly in communication and critical reasoning, AHSS pursues a three-part mission. One responsibility is to provide educational opportunities in support of other degree programs at STCC through studies in what are generally referred to as the “liberal arts,” those classes which constitute the core of a student’s general education. The second mission of AHSS is to offer degree options and certificates of completion in Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice and Early Childhood Education.

The third aspect of the School’s mission is to provide the foundations for the Liberal Arts Transfer degree, a program of study that parallels the first two years of a four year institution’s liberal arts program, and thereby enables students to transfer to a senior college and work toward a bachelor’s degree. The minimum requirements for the degree are 62 semester hours: 20 courses including 6 credits of English Composition, 12 credits in the Humanities, 18 credits in the Social Sciences, and 11 credits in Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and a minimum cumulative quality point average of 2.0. Up to six credits may be earned through Cooperative Education.

The School’s General Studies program serves a large population of students with a broad variety of academic needs and aspirations. These include acquiring foundational academic skills through the English as a Second Language and Developmental English departments, exploring and selecting career/academic pathways, and satisfying pre-requisites for degree programs. The principal function of General Studies is to accommodate the various transfer needs of its students through several program options. Each option offers a sequence of courses which will assist students in completing the requirements necessary for the General Studies Transfer degree or other degrees offered at STCC.

The School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is overseen by Interim Dean Anne Bonemery.
