Alcohol and Drug Counseling - HSSW.COC

The Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) Certificate of Completion prepares students with the skills they need to enter and advance in the alcohol and drug services field. Upon completion of the program, students may be eligible to sit for the Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor II (LADC II) licensing exam in Massachusetts.

The 9-month certificate program also prepares students for the Human Services/Social Work associates program and provides a general introduction to the social work field, along with employable skills for a wide range of human services positions. All credits earned in the ADC Certificate of Completion can be applied toward completion of the Human Services/Social Work associates program.

Upon the successful completion of requirements of this program, the Certificate of Completion in Alcohol and Drug Counseling will be awarded.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of this program will:

  • Become familiar with substance abuse community resources and be able to make recommendations appropriate for a client 
  • Develop an understanding of co-occurring mental health and medical issues and how these complexities relate to the overall functioning of the client
  • Apply the Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor Code of Ethics to a wide variety of scenarios 
  • Utilize best practices in substance abuse intake, treatment, and counseling 
  • Develop and lead substance abuse group work in a wide variety of scenarios including but not limited to substance abuse rehabilitation treatment and at-risk population support  
  • Understand and assist with best practices in alcohol and substance abuse prevention and treatment
